PRODUCT GUIDES · PROTECT · 3 MIN READ

A hospital bill and an interruption to earning are different financial problems. Read what a policy actually promises for each.

How it works

Personal-accident products can define benefits for accidental death and specified forms of disability. The insured event, disability definition and benefit schedule are crucial. A benefit for one defined accident outcome is not automatically cover for every illness, impairment or period away from work.

Product designs vary. The example prospectus linked below illustrates why death, permanent total and permanent partial disability need separate reading; it is not a recommendation or a description of every insurer’s contract. Use the wording of the product you are considering.

Six things to compare

  • Covered cause

Read the definition of accident and the events that trigger a claim. Ask how illness-related incapacity differs under the contract.

  • Disability definitions

Check permanent total, permanent partial and temporary categories where offered. Ordinary use of the word disability may differ from the policy definition.

  • Benefit schedule

Read whether payment is a specified amount, a percentage or another defined benefit. Ask how multiple relevant benefits interact.

  • Work and occupation

Answer occupation and activity questions accurately. Ask about conditions relevant to the work, travel or activities in your actual routine.

  • Exclusions and limits

Read restrictions, benefit duration, waiting conditions and optional covers. Do not assume an add-on is included in the base premium.

  • Claim and continuity

Keep reporting instructions, required evidence and service contacts accessible. Plan how bills would be paid while a claim is assessed.

Look beyond the medical expense

Imagine a temporary interruption to earning. Write down the hospital costs, routine household bills, extra assistance and any continuing income separately. Then identify which specific policy, employer benefit or cash reserve might address each line. Leave an item unassigned if you cannot point to an actual entitlement; that gap is useful information.

Which event and which definition trigger payment?

  • Accidental death

A specified accidental event and death benefit are defined in the contract.

Ask: Check covered circumstances, exclusions and documents.

  • Permanent disability

Payment depends on the policy’s disability definitions and benefit schedule.

Ask: Compare the definition of total or partial disability, not just the benefit headline.

  • Temporary interruption

Some contracts have specified temporary benefits; others do not.

Ask: Check duration, waiting conditions, occupation terms and payment caps.

A decision to work through

An illness-related inability to work and an accident-related disability can have similar household cash effects but different insurance treatment. Put the cause of interruption beside the policy’s trigger. Where the match is absent or uncertain, record a gap rather than assuming every lost wage is insured. Accessibility needs and earning ability should be discussed with the individual, never inferred from a disability label.

Keep a comparison record

Write the purpose, amount, time horizon and access date at the top. For each option, record the source document and date, costs in rupees where possible, what could go wrong and what remains uncertain. Compare on the same basis: a different payout, risk or restriction can explain an attractive headline.

Before your next step

Create a cover map rather than buying by label. Put accident benefits, health cover, employer support and accessible cash on separate lines. Ask for written clarification of any definition you cannot apply to a realistic example. Respect an individual’s actual work and access needs instead of assuming all disabled people have the same earning circumstances.

Questions worth clearing up

Does accident cover replace health insurance?

Do not assume so. Compare insured causes, medical-expense benefits and other payments in the actual contracts.

Does disability wording promise my full salary?

Not by the label alone. Read the trigger, benefit amount, duration and evidence requirements; salary replacement cannot be assumed.
