Protect the people behind the income.

PRODUCT GUIDES · PROTECT · 3 MIN READ

Start with the people and commitments that depend on you. Then read the contract that is supposed to protect them.

How it works

Life insurance pays benefits according to a contract. A term-insurance product generally centres on a death benefit during the covered term; savings-linked, whole-life and other structures have different benefit patterns. Read the actual policy rather than assuming every life product performs the same job.

Separate protection from saving and investing when making the comparison. Ask what event triggers payment, who would need the money, how long the need may last and whether the premium commitment is sustainable. A large benefit headline cannot explain the exclusions or claims requirements.

Six things to compare

  • The need being covered

List dependants, debts and responsibilities. Consider existing resources too. Avoid turning a generic income multiple into a personalised answer.

  • Insured event and term

Read whose life is covered, the trigger for benefit and the period of protection. Match the period with the commitment you are trying to protect.

  • Premium commitment

Check payment duration, frequency and what happens if payments stop. Consider affordability through a difficult income period.

  • Benefits and conditions

Separate guaranteed contractual benefits from illustrations and conditional amounts. Ask which assumption determines each figure.

  • Disclosure and exclusions

Complete proposal information accurately and read exclusions. Keep copies of answers and resolve medical or occupation questions with the insurer.

  • Nomination and claims

Keep nomination, contact and policy records current. Make sure the people who may need to claim can locate the insurer’s procedure.

Write the household continuity plan

Imagine an income stops permanently. List the obligations that remain, resources already available, people who need access and the time they might need to reorganise. This does not calculate a suitable sum assured, but it makes the insurance discussion concrete. Include unpaid care and practical responsibilities as well as cash earnings.

Compare protection on the same insured-event basis

  • Term protection

Ask what death benefit is payable during the covered term.

Ask: Compare disclosure requirements, exclusions, term and beneficiaries.

  • Savings-linked policy

Ask which parts are guaranteed and which are illustrated or conditional.

Ask: Separate protection, premiums, maturity, surrender and liquidity questions.

  • Existing workplace benefit

Ask what is supplied through employment and when it ends.

Ask: Do not assume it continues unchanged after leaving the job.

A decision to work through

A household may need both current cash and support after a breadwinner’s death. A large sum assured does not meet a bill today unless the insured event occurs and the contract pays. Keep emergency liquidity separate, and list debts, dependants’ needs, other resources and duration before comparing quotations. This is a needs worksheet, not a recommended cover amount.

Keep a comparison record

Write the purpose, amount, time horizon and access date at the top. For each option, record the source document and date, costs in rupees where possible, what could go wrong and what remains uncertain. Compare on the same basis: a different payout, risk or restriction can explain an attractive headline.

Before your next step

Prepare a needs note before comparing illustrations. Read the policy wording and current customer documents, then ask for written answers to unresolved questions. Store the policy and claims contacts where the appropriate family member can find them.

Questions worth clearing up

Is every life policy an investment product?

No. Products can have different protection and savings structures. Compare the actual benefit design and the job you need it to do.

Can this page tell me the exact cover to buy?

No. It provides a framework for questions; your dependants, liabilities, health, affordability and contract terms need individual consideration.
