Build the retirement pot. Plan the income too.

PRODUCT GUIDES · PLAN INCOME · 3 MIN READ

Retirement planning has two tasks: building resources while you earn and organising cash when work changes. An account balance alone cannot describe both.

How it works

NPS Trust describes NPS as a market-linked contribution scheme for retirement saving. The eventual outcome depends on contributions, investment performance, costs and the rules applying to the account. A pension-system label should not be interpreted as a fixed return on every contribution.

Read current rules for your account category, contribution choices and exit. Do not apply an old withdrawal or annuity percentage without checking the current regulation and relevant circumstances. Keep employment pensions, other savings and household obligations on the same retirement map.

Six things to compare

  • Account and category

Which NPS account and subscriber category are you considering? Ask what features, restrictions and processes apply to that specific arrangement.

  • Contribution capacity

Separate your own contribution from any employer contribution. Decide what is affordable after current commitments and accessible reserves.

  • Investment choices

Read the investment choice and asset exposure. Ask what a difficult market period would mean for the account value and your plans.

  • Costs and service

Check the charges of the relevant intermediaries and the service process. Keep statements and access credentials under your own control.

  • Access and exit

Read the current rules for partial access, exit and income arrangements. Note which answers depend on age, account category or other conditions.

  • Retirement spending

Estimate essential costs, flexible spending and irregular bills. Compare expected cash sources by timing and certainty, rather than comparing balances alone.

Turn a retirement number into a cash map

List the household’s expected monthly essentials at retirement and the sources intended to meet them. Mark each source as contractual, employment-related, investment-dependent or a planned capital withdrawal. Add the expenses that do not arrive monthly. This shows what still needs investigation without pretending that a single corpus figure guarantees a way of life.

Retirement account, pension promise or withdrawal plan?

  • NPS accumulation

Contributions build an account exposed to its selected investments and costs.

Ask: Check your category, investment choices, charges and applicable exit rules.

  • Annuity

An insurance contract supplies payments on stated terms.

Ask: Compare survivor options, purchase-price return and limits on access.

  • Self-managed withdrawals

Assets are sold or drawn on to meet expenses.

Ask: Check market paths, inflation, longevity and capital depletion.

A decision to work through

Two people with the same retirement account balance can face different income needs because housing, dependants, health costs and other pensions differ. First subtract dependable continuing receipts from essential expenses. Then model how the gap changes. Do not infer a permitted lump-sum or annuity proportion from another subscriber’s category; check current applicable rules.

Keep a comparison record

Write the purpose, amount, time horizon and access date at the top. For each option, record the source document and date, costs in rupees where possible, what could go wrong and what remains uncertain. Compare on the same basis: a different payout, risk or restriction can explain an attractive headline.

Before your next step

Download your actual statement and current account rules. Write the intended retirement date, contribution plan, accessible cash outside retirement accounts and questions about exit. Revisit the map after a job change, new dependant or major change in spending.

Questions worth clearing up

Is an NPS account an assured pension amount?

Do not infer a fixed pension from a market-linked account balance. Read the applicable exit and income arrangements.

Can an SWP calculator forecast my NPS outcome?

No. The SiP Money SWP tool is simplified withdrawal arithmetic; it does not model NPS account rules or a pension entitlement.
