A withdrawal is cash. It may also be capital.

PRODUCT GUIDES · PLAN INCOME · 3 MIN READ

A regular transfer to your bank account can feel like a salary. Understand what is being sold to make that transfer possible.

How it works

A Systematic Withdrawal Plan arranges periodic redemptions from a mutual-fund investment under the provider’s terms. Cash received can include money taken from your existing capital. It should not automatically be described as interest, profit or a guaranteed income stream.

When markets change, the units sold and value remaining can differ from a smooth illustration. The order of returns matters when withdrawals are taking place. Costs, exit conditions and applicable taxes also need checking against the actual holding and current rules.

Six things to compare

  • Purpose of withdrawal

Which bills are being funded and how flexible are they? Separate essential commitments from spending you could reduce.

  • Source of cash

Read how units are redeemed and cash is settled. Keep withdrawals distinct from investment earnings in your household records.

  • Remaining capital

Look beyond the bank credit to the value still invested. Ask what a lower balance would mean for later years.

  • Market path

Compare a difficult early period with a smooth average. The same assumed average does not describe every sequence of returns.

  • Costs and access

Check redemption terms, exit loads, settlement and current tax implications. Avoid treating an illustration as a net cash quote.

  • Review and fallback

Choose a review date and a response if the plan weakens. Consider spending flexibility and other actual sources of support.

Zero growth makes the capital visible

Start with an illustrative ₹1,20,000 balance and withdraw ₹20,000 monthly with no return or charges. Only six full withdrawals can be funded. Asking for payments for a year does not create the missing capital. The SiP Money calculator keeps requested, paid and unmet amounts separate and caps payments at the balance available.

Withdrawal plan or contractual income?

  • SWP

Units are redeemed to supply requested cash.

Ask: Check the remaining capital and what happens after poor early returns.

  • Deposit payout

Interest and principal access follow deposit terms.

Ask: Compare payout timing, renewal risk and early-exit conditions.

  • Annuity

    Payments follow an insurance contract.

Ask: Compare guarantees, survivor benefits and limits on access.

A decision to work through

₹1,20,000 with no growth and ₹20,000 requested monthly can fund six full withdrawals. Month seven has no available capital in this model. By contrast, positive smooth growth delays depletion but does not remove sequence risk in real markets. Separate requested, paid and unmet amounts, and test inflation alongside the withdrawal plan.

Keep a comparison record

Write the purpose, amount, time horizon and access date at the top. For each option, record the source document and date, costs in rupees where possible, what could go wrong and what remains uncertain. Compare on the same basis: a different payout, risk or restriction can explain an attractive headline.

Before your next step

Write the amount you plan to withdraw, the bills it serves, available capital and the date to review. Test lower-return and higher-spending assumptions. Read the full guide on withdrawal order before using a single smooth scenario as evidence that a plan will last.

Questions worth clearing up

Is the withdrawal amount the investment return?

No. It may include a reduction of capital. Track money received and the remaining holding separately.

Does the calculator establish a safe withdrawal rate?

No. It is simplified arithmetic with hypothetical assumptions, not a market-path simulation or a personalised sustainability assessment.
